General questions

What is the difference between Karat and Carat?

There is often confusion between the terms Carat and Karat or CT and KT.

Karat is a term used to indicate gold purity. In many countries it is a legal standard to stamp gold jewelry with markings such as 10KT, 14KT and 18KT. The Karat stamp indicates the purity of the metal. Pure gold is 24 karat so the number preceding the KT marking indicates how many parts out of 24 are pure gold. For example 14KT indicates that there are 14 units of pure gold mixed with 10 units of other metal. These alloys are added to control durability, color and cost of fine jewelry.

Carat is a unit of weight used to measure diamonds and precious gemstones. In ancient times in India, traders used carob seeds on balance scales to determine the weight of gemstones. As time passed the term carob evolved into the word carat and an exact weight was assigned. In modern times the carat is equal to 1/5 of a gram or 200 mg. A carat is broken down into 100 units known as points. Stones that weigh less than 1 carat are indicated by a decimal point. An example is that a half carat stone weighs .50ct and can be referred to as 50 points.

What is the difference between platinum, white gold, and silver?

When it comes to all three of these options, the deciding factors are usually in regard to budget, durability, and maintenance.

Platinum is the most expensive metal and is also the densest of all. It is a naturally white metal, and will remain that way for life without the need for maintenance.  This makes platinum a low maintenance option.  It’s something to consider when thinking about making your new design a family heirloom for future generations.  It will withstand the test of time and wear.

18 karat white gold features an intermediate price point - it contains a higher percentage of gold than 14 karat, thereby making it a more precious option.  Since gold is a yellow metal, alloying and rhodium-plating it is required for gold to achieve a white color.  Alloying allows for gold to look smoky-white, and rhodium plating gives it a bright white finish.  This plating does wear off, however, so clients who prefer a bright white finish should have their ring re-plated (about once every 18 months).

14k white gold is the less expensive option, because it contains a lower concentration of gold than 18k.  This option is also rhodium plated.

General Maintenance

 1.  One of the most effective ways to protect your ring/jewelry is to make sure it is the last thing you put on in the morning and the first thing you take off in the evening.  Specifically, it should be removed before you shower, apply lotions or makeup, exercise, or perform house chores.  Product and chemicals can build up around and underneath your setting, causing your ring to look dull.

 2.  Store your jewelry in a proper box, away from other pieces of jewellery which can cause abrasion to your ring.  Also beware of sinks and basins.

 3.  When removing your jewelry, do so by holding the band rather than to the gemstone, which can weaken its prongs over time.

 4.  Do not wear your engagement ring or jewelry while swimming or working out at a gym.  Your fingers shrink in water/sweat, making it easy for your ring to accidentally slip off.

Cleaning and servicing your Jewels especially Engagement Rings.

It’s completely natural for your engagement ring to acquire build-up over the course of ordinary wear.   This happens because your ring is exposed to dust, dirt, chemicals, and perspiration on a daily basis.  To keep your Jewelry looking its sparkly best, we recommend cleaning your jewels whenever it starts to look dull.  You can clean your ring at home in a small bowl with warm water and a few drops of dish washing liquid.  Using a very soft toothbrush, gently brush behind the stone where grime can collect.  Rinse your ring thoroughly and pat dry with a clean cloth.

We recommend having your Jewelry professionally cleaned and inspected every 6 months.  Your ring should also be serviced if it has undergone trauma, such as being dropped or struck.  Even if they look unharmed, it may have issues that can only be detected by a professional.  These inspections will make sure that the prongs are secure, which helps to prevent the loss of your diamond or gemstone if your ring has been inadvertently damaged.

Ethics

Do you use conflict free diamonds?

Yes.  All of our diamonds are Kimberly Process compliant.

What is the Kimberly Process?
The Kimberley Process certification was created in 2003 to break the relationship between diamonds and bloodshed. This process monitors conflict diamonds – that is, diamonds that fund bloody civil wars. It’s set up to assure consumers that by purchasing diamonds they are  not financing war and disgusting human rights violations that have been carried out in such conflicts.
